Anupam Kher is a well-known actor who has acted in many Bollywood movies as well as international movies and participated in TV shows. D.A.V school is where Kher studied and he graduated from Shimla’s Himachal Pradesh University with a degree in economics. He was studying in a government college, Sanjauli, and he left it mid-way to pursue his carrier in acting. Punjab University, Chandigarh is where he pursued Indian theatre.

Kher took part in many plays in Himachal Pradesh. For getting a small role in his debut film, Sheeshay ka Ghar in 1984, he went to drama classes in Lucknow at Raj Bisaria’s Bharatendu Natya Akadem. In 1984, he got his first role in Bollywood in Saaransh. In this movie, he played the role of a 64-year-old teacher. He grabbed the Filmfare award for best supporting actor for his next movie Vijay in 1988 and he also acted in Tezaab.
For his performance in the movie Ram Lakhan in 1989, Kher received special recognition. He received a Filmfare award for best performer under a comic role for this movie. In 1989 he also won a Filmfare Critics award and a national award for his performance in the movie Daddy.
Kher got a Filmfare nomination for best actor in a supporting role for his performance in Dil in 1990. For his role in Lamhe in 1991, he got a Filmfare award for best comedian. In 1992 he acted in Beta with Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. His performance in the same year in Khel got him the best film fare award as a comedian.
He grabbed Filmfare’s best comedian award again for his performance in Darr in 1993. He also got an opportunity to act in another blockbuster Laadla in 1994. Yet another blockbuster he acted in 1994 was Hum Aapke hain Kaun for which he got a Filmfare nomination as a best supporting actor. In 1995, his performance in Dilwale Dulhaniya Lejayenge brought him yet another Filmfare award for best comedian. After three years of gap, he came back in 1998 with Kuch Kuch hota hai and received a Filmfare nomination for best comedian.

Kher directed the movie Om Jai Jagadish and was also the producer of the movie. He started a film production company called Karol Bagh Productions in collaboration with Satish Kaushik in 2007. Their first movie was Teree Sang: A Kidult Love Story in 2009.

For his performance in I Did Not Kill Gandhi in 2005, he received the best actor award at the Karachi International film festival. The Mistress of Spice in 2005, lust, caution in 2007, the tv show ER, Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook in 2012, and Hotel Mumbai in 2018 were his other foreign movies. He received a nomination for Bafta for his supporting role in The Boy with the Topknot in 2017.
In 2019, he took up the role of former prime minister Manmohan Singh in the movie Accidental Prime Minister. He acted in the controversial movie, Kashmir Files in 2022 which was a blockbuster. For his short film Happy Birthday in 2021, he was awarded best actor at New York International film festival.
Two national film awards, eight Filmfare awards, two international Indian film academy awards, two screen awards in India, and five other state awards were received by him. The U.S. of Texas handed over the “honored guest” award for his contribution to cinema. Padma Shri in 2004 and Padma Bhushan in 2016 were handed over to him.

Pratham Education Foundation which looks after the improvement of the education of children in India appointed Kher as a goodwill ambassador in 2010. In 2021 from the Hindu University of America, Kher received a doctorate degree in Philosophy of Hindu Studies.
Anupam kher has been called an advocate for UN’s gender equality campaign. Kher would address boys to stand up against injustice done to women. He is an advocate to “Heforshe” campaign and kher has promised full support for the campaign.
